L’idea della luminescenza – che è cosa diversa dalla luce, dalla quale si differenzia perché la luce illumina l’intorno, mentre la luminescenza illumina ciò che la produce – nasce dalla straordinarietà delle lucciole, di certi bruchi vividamente luminosi nella notte tra i cespugli, di alcuni pesci degli abissi, ma anche dalla sveglietta con le cifre fosforescenti, che intimavano di alzarsi per andare al lavoro.

The idea of luminescence – something that differs from light, because light illuminates the surroundings while luminescence illuminates what produces it – stems from the extraordinary nature of fireflies, certain caterpillars that are brightly-luminous in the bushes by night, certain fish in the abysses, and the phosphorescent numerals on an alarm clock that wakes us up to get to work.

Ventiquattro oggetti diversi e unici, realizzati tessendo il filo elettroluminescente e la treccia d’acciaio.
La luce diventa solida, l’acciaio diventa plastico. Il groviglio ha un aspetto barocco: deriva dell’iniziale amore per Borromini e Bernini, per i grandi affreschisti del Sei e Settecento.
Ventiquattro oggetti che utilizzano lo stesso supporto forato a griglia quadrata.
Nei fori il filo elettroluminescente e la treccia d’acciaio entrano ed escono, creando volute e spire, tratti curvi più o meno tesi, più o meno involuti.
Per questo lavoro Barrese ha realizzato un set strutturale molto semplice, razionale e lineare che permette un elevato grado di libertà e di casualità, quasi di libero automatismo nella disposizione dei fili.
La treccia d’acciaio compone – in modo non immediatamente leggibile – le lettere che formano le parole Guardami, Toccami, Ascoltami.
Il filo elettroluminescente, invece, crea forme variabili che le inglobano in un viluppo che assume forma autonoma.
Morphology è contemporaneamente un’installazione e una serie di pezzi unici variamente raggruppabili.

Twenty-four unique, different objects made by weaving together electroluminescent wire and braided steel. The light becomes solid and the steel becomes plastic in a tangle that has a baroque aspect to it, deriving as it does from an early love for Borromini and Bernini, for the great fresco painters of the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. Twenty-four objects using the same perforated square grid support, the electroluminescent wire and braided steel entering and exiting the holes, creating volutes and coils, sharper or milder curves, more or less tightly wound.
In this work, Barrese has created a very simple, rational and linear structural assembly that allows for a high degree of freedom and randomness – inded, almost free automatism in the wire arrangement.
Although it is not immediately recognizable, the braided steel forms letters that make up the words Guardami, Toccami, Ascoltami [Look at me, Touch me, Listen to me].
The electroluminescent wire, on the other hand, creates variable shapes incorporating them into a tangle that takes on an autonomous form.
Morphology is at one and the same time both an installation and a series of unique pieces that can be grouped together in various ways.

QUADRI ELETTROLUMINESCENTI

Il Lytec è un filo elettroluminescente di piccolo diametro (da 1 a 6 mm), luminoso in tutta la superficie, alimentato a bassa tensione tramite un inverter, disponibile in una vasta gamma di colori. Una vera rivoluzione che permette, letteralmente, di disegnare con la luce, con la luce solida.
La sperimentazione con il Lytec è iniziata per sviluppare le ricerche di Narrativa Visuale e realizzare un libro-oggetto con tecnologie sinergicamente integrate alla stampa.
Il libro luminoso avrebbe dovuto riprodurre una lettera su ciascuna pagina e comporre, nella sua interezza, la frase: L’Arte rende sufficiente il Nulla.
Impresa non riuscita, il libro sarebbe diventato enorme e poco manovrabile!

ELECTROLUMINESCENT PANELS

The Lytec is a small-diameter (1 to 6 mm) electroluminescent wire luminous over its entire surface, powered at low voltage by an inverter and available in a wide range of colours.
A real revolution, it literally made it possible to draw with light, with solid light.
I began experimenting with Lytec to develop my Visual Narrative research and create a book/object using technologies synergistically integrated into printing.
The luminous book was supposed to reproduce a letter on each page and, over the whole book, compose the whole sentence: Art makes nothingness sufficient.
It didn’t work out; the book ended up huge and unwieldy!
